A man had a little daughter―an only and much―loved child。 He lived for her―she was his life。 So when she became ill, he became like a man possessed, moving heaven and earth to bring about her restoration to health。
一个男人有一个小女儿,那是唯一的孩子,他深深地爱着她,为她而活,她就是他的生命。所以,当女儿生病时,他像疯了一般竭尽全力想让她恢复健康。
His best efforts, however, proved unavailing and the child died。 The father became a bitter recluse, shutting himself away from his many friends and refusing every activity that might restore his poise and bring him back to his normal self。 But one night he had a dream。
然而,他全部的努力都无济于事,女儿还是死了。父亲变得痛苦遁世,避开了许多朋友,拒绝参加一切能使他恢复平静,回到自我的活动。但有一天夜里,他做了一个梦。
He was in heaven, witnessing a grand pageant of all the little child angels。 They were marching in a line passing by the Great White Throne。 Every white―robed angelic child carried a candle。 He noticed that one child‘s candle was not lighted。 Then he saw that the child with the dark candle was his own little girl。 Rushing to her, he seized her in his arms, caressed her tenderly, and then asked, “How is it, darling, that your candle alone is unlighted?” “Daddy, they often relight it, but your tears always put it out。”
Just then he awoke from his dream。 The lesson was crystal clear, and its effects were immediate。 From that hour on he was not a recluse, but mingled freely and cheerfully with his former friends and associates。 No longer would his darling‘s candle be extinguished by his useless tears。
Compared with the forty year old shabby dormitory I am living in now, theone I lived in for three years in high school was heaven: three students sharedone brand new suite with air conditioners and a bathroom.
In three years time we changed it thoroughly:the color of the floor turnedfrom bright pink into muddy gray, and the closet a hive of insects proliferatingamong piles of rotten fruit. And our masterpiece was the bathroom, a never dryingswamp which served as the habitat of various kinds of mold, and even rodents, rats would occasionally take the trouble to pay us a visit, and.., all three ofus felt like sobbing when we at last had to say good bye to our lovely filthydormitory. Maybe it is because that the dormitory had changed us as well as wedchanged it.
The first lesson our dormitory taught us was to look after ourselves.Frankly speaking, we were not good students at all. I still remember theunderwear that was soaked in soapy water for one and a half years before it wasfinally thrown away. Almost each of the boys dormitories had graduallydeveloped its own unique "fragrance" usually a mixture of rotten fruit, unwashedsocks, stunk towels and some junk food. We could tell one dormitory from anotherby sniffing instead of looking. Our tolerance towards untidiness wasamazing.
However, in spite of all this, we really did make some progress. Bit bybit, we started to wash dirty clothes before they stunk, cleaned the garbage binwhen it could hold no more trash, we even used brushes in a not-sc-successfulattempt to refurbish the floor. The point was that we were not obeying anyorder, we did every bit of the cleaning for ourselves, because we wanted to livein a better place. Though nothing we did could be called an achievement, it wasthe first time we fully bore the consequences of our behavior, and took theresponsibility.
Thus it was not surprising that I often found myself the only one to cleanup my university dormitory which looked no better than a garbage bin when myroommates felt normal of it.
When talking about our dormitory life, and probably all the dormitory life,we should never leave out one thing. This was what we called "bed talks". Thoughit was considered "illegal,"there was nothing to stop us from deliberatelystarting a heated discussion right after lights were out. It was our favoriteand the only way of ending our day, and we were as punctual for it as ourparents are for work. What was the most common topic?Girls, of course! Whatother topics were there for three energetic adolescent males lying comfortablyin bed? We judged them, ranked them, argued over them night after night withoutfeeling the slightest sense of boredom for three whole years. Were we maniacs? Who is not a maniac at eighteen?
I recently started a new job, in a small office, where four of us share afridge. In that fridge is a Brita water filter pitcher. One of my coworkerscomplained the water tasted "dirty".It went on for a few days, and she wasstunned I could drink the water without any trouble.I started to doubt my tastebuds, but the water really tasted fine.
Finally, she figured out the problem was actually her cup.She simplyforgot to clean it, and after awhile started to affect the water inside it.Shecleaned her cup, and drank the water with no problem.
I can't help but think about the world we live in.Too often we quicklyblame other people, other things, anything else but ourselves."You're racist"."You're intolerant"."You're the problem".The world isn't perfect, I know, butI think we should take a step back sometimes and ask ourselves some toughquestions.
Can I be better? Is my heart really pure? Can I help this situation withkindness?
I want to tell you this; please clean your cup.Because when you do, thewater will taste much better.I promise you this.
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. The issue of the Yellow River hasbecome the biggest concern of members of the Chinese peoples PoliticalConsultative Conference. My childhood, in fact, is closely associated with theriver. My father is an engineering geologist, and he used to take me with him onhis trips to the hydropower stations on the river.I enjoyed those trips, especially the trip to Longyang Xia reservoir.Although ten years have passedsince my visit, I can still recall the scenery; I can still recall the water Isaw at the reservoir. It was pure, clean and blue, not like the water I saw inthe middle reaches of the river, which had turned brown and muddy after passingthrough the Loess Plateau.
Once during our stay at the power station, we were caught in athunderstorm. And when rain stopped, I could see trickles of water rolling downmountain slopes and flowing into the reservoir. It carried little mud or sand, because at that time, trees and grass still grew around the reservoir. And theyprotected the soil.At Longyang Xia I was struck by the beauty of nature, and asa child I wanted to stay there and to grow up with our Yellow River.
Li Bai, the Tang Dynasty poet, said praises to the flowing water in theYellow River. He saw it as coming down from heaven and nurturing the peoplealong her way to the sea. However, in 1997,for 330days, not a single drop ofwater from the Yellow River went into the sea.And droughts are not the onlypunishment by nature.A friend of my father's, a university professor, is doingresearch on the Yellow River.According to this professor, the Yellow River willsoon change its course if we allow this situation to continue.Because there isno longer enough water to carry away the silt and mud in the lower reaches ofthe river and the riverbed rises higher and higher each year.
We have taken too much from nature, but given back too little in return. And this is the cost of the unbalanced growth. If we had taken care of thevegetation in the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River, we would stillexperience the river as Li Bai described it.
While the developed countries are consuming proportionally more naturalresources than the rest of the world, they've also taken some good measures inprotecting nature. And as a developing country, China can learn from them inthis aspect.
Last year, when I was visiting Australia with a group of Chinese studentswho had won prizes in an English Skills Test, our Australian hosts invited us tojoin them for a horse-ride in the mountains. After two hours on horseback, wereached a valley, where there was a most beautiful meadow, with flowers in allcolors dotted on a huge blanket of green. When I began to praise the beauty ofnature, my friends told me that in this valley, there used to be a big mine andthe wastewater from the mine turned everything brown. When the mine wasabandoned, people made great efforts to restore the green vegetation. They alsoused the latest biological technology choosing the best grass seeds suitable forthe local soil.So the beautiful meadow is a result of commitment, hard work, and new technology.
What happened to this valley in Australia should also happen to our YellowRiver and, in fact, it is happening.I have seen farmers planting trees onmountains along the Yellow River.I have seen them climb the mountain tops withseedlings on their shoulders because they had no machinery.I have seen thempour on trees the water they had carried up in buckets from miles down thevalley. These farmers are quietly nourishing our Yellow River, just as the riverhas nourished them.
And these farmers, men and women I don't know, gave me the confidence thatwe and our Yellow River will grow together, and someday in the future, we willbe able to drink the clean water from our Yellow River again, because she is ourdearest mother.
Thank you.
Hello everyone! My name isxxx, a student fromxxxxxxxcollege. I am glad to give you a speech about my university. The title of my speech is My college, my home.
Last September I left my hometown with heavy baggage and after a journey of ten hours, I came to this dream campus with great expectation and excitement.
I was deeply attracted by the elegant environment of our campus the moment I stepped into the university. Straight, wide roads enjoyed the shade and shelter provided by lordly, green trees. Ancient buildings of great refinement enjoyed the company of flocks of birds flying and singing overhead. Scrolls of warm welcome greeted me and volunteers with smiles came to my help. My heart was filled with warmth. Yeah, this is the place where I will spend 4 years and this place will be my home!
Whenever I recall the past days, so many thoughts are flooding in my mind. But what impressed me most is a night when I got a stomachache during the first days. I had to turn to the aunts in charge of our dormitory for help. They were so friendly and warm-hearted. They gave me the pills and reminded me of having more hot water. I recovered soon and I thanked them from the bottom of my heart because they brought me the warmth of home.
Our university is a famous academic center. The teaching staff are all learned professors. Many of them are world-wide known for their wide range of knowledge and charming personality. I respect my teachers! I admire my teachers! I love my teachers! Various activities are carried here. They not only bring me happiness but also improve myself. I meet with a lot of classmates and make a large number of friends. When I feel upset, the will give me a hand; when I am happy, I will share with them. The library has a large collection of books and I always lose myself in it. I believe they will benefit me a lot and are to broaden the roads of my future.
I love you, xxxxUniversity! You are just a place which gives me warmth and strengths! You are my home!
